Jerry started his racing career as a crew member on Mike Rootes’ Enduro car, before either one of them joined Fatboy Racing. After two years on the crew, he decided to try driving; so he purchased a rolling chassis and finished building it himself, racing for Fatboy in the 1996 Hobby Stock series. After correcting a recurring transmission problem with the help of his teammates, he finished in the Top 10 several times.

This season he chose to build a new car from the ground up, as well as to crew for other drivers, and he also built an Enduro car for his wife, Judy, to race. This was a good learning year for him, as he was a crew chief or crew member for ten different cars running in the Bomber, Figure Eight, and Enduro classes. He plans to race Hobby Stock again in the 1998 season.
